Get involved at EBTL

Encouraging people and communities to work with nature is one of the primary motivations of the EBTL project. Nestled beside forest hills, our site offers rich learning opportunities for those eager to explore ecological restoration.

Our endeavor is to restore the local ecology of the Eastern Ghats. This work involves managing a native forest nursery, documenting and studying various flora and fauna, monitoring planted landscapes, birding and herping walks and other citizen science activities.

In the food gardens, we engage in compost making, fermenting fertiliser teas and other gardening work, from sowing to harvesting of crops. We have a Learning Centre dedicated to hosting skill development workshops and other programmes.

If you are someone who is excited by the idea of volunteering with us or contributing to restoration activities, we'd love to hear from you! Write to us at varun.b@rainmatter.org.

Volunteering Guidelines & FAQs

Volunteering at EBTL comes with the unique experience of being close to the forest. To ensure a safe and respectful environment for both human and more-than-human inhabitants, please keep these guidelines in mind:

Minimizing Noise and Light Pollution

  • No speakers or loud noises – Many wild creatures are sensitive to sound pollution.
  • Minimal artificial lighting at night – Excessive light disrupts nocturnal wildlife, so we keep our site as dark as possible to support a thriving habitat.

Alcohol, Smoking, and Intoxicants

  • The consumption of alcohol, cigarettes, or any other intoxicants is strictly prohibited during the volunteering program.

Clothing and Gear

  • Wear long-sleeved shirts, full-length pants, and sturdy shoes to protect yourself from insects and rough terrain.
  • Bring a headlamp or flashlight (preferably with a red light mode) to navigate in low-light conditions without disturbing wildlife.

  • Encounters with snakes and other creatures are common. Most are harmless, but some venomous species are present as well. Snakes are naturally shy and will not bite unless provoked.
  • If you see a snake, scorpion, or spider outdoors, leave them undisturbed—they are part of the ecosystem.
  • If you find one inside your room or tent, notify the staff, and they will safely relocate it.
  • Note: The nearest hospital with antivenom is 30 km away, so caution is advised.
  • Essentials: Reusable water bottle, biodegradable toiletries, sunscreen, insect repellent, flashlight, and sturdy footwear.
  • Recommended: Notebook, binoculars (for birding), and any personal medications.
  • Yes, we recommend lightweight, full-coverage clothing to protect against sun, insects, and thorny plants.

  • We provide simple, nutritious vegetarian meals made from locally sourced ingredients.
  • Vegan options can be accommodated with prior notice.
  • Cell reception may be limited depending on your provider.
  • We encourage volunteers to disconnect and immerse themselves in the experience, but emergency communication is always available.
  • Basic first aid is available on-site.
  • For more serious issues, the nearest hospital is 30 km away.
  • We recommend bringing any personal medications and informing us of any medical conditions beforehand.
  • No prior experience is needed! We welcome people from all backgrounds. However, an openness to learning and respect for nature are key.
